3: Building plans and ideas for my free little art gallery

And we’re back!

Here I will be documenting and expanding my process of researching, exploring, planning, and building my free little art gallery to then install in front of my house to see how the community engages with it.

I’m hoping that along the way I’ll be able to find ways to implement creative interactive community collaborations into classrooms and schools to help foster a sense of engaging with a community and helping students recognize that they are a part of a larger society and it can be fun to participate in that!

I’ve been able to find some building plans on a website called littlefreelibrary.org, that has a selection of different style libraries to choose from.

The first is a Modern Two Story Library which is a simple enough design to build, with the option for 2 little art gallery spaces in the library, or I’m thinking it might be nice to make it a simple one story design with lots of wall spaces for little art pieces.

The next design option would be a more elaborate design of little cedar roof basic library that would involve some more elaborate wood cuts, but is totally adorable

Lastly, and my most likely option, would be to upcycle an old kitchen cabinet into a little library. I could either build it or find a used one that I could transform

I’ll most likely be cruising Facebook marketplace to find some sort of cabinet that I can transform, as my time constraints involve the impending cold weather, rain, and snow!

Something that I really appreciate about these free little libraries, is that people who create them seem interested in contributing to the community, and that is evident in even through finding building plans for these little libraries. In a world where everyone is hustling and trying to make a dollar (which is also valid and sometimes a symptom of poverty), its nice to remember to sometimes freely share information instead of gatekeeping it.
